Chest Mimic

I painted this chest mimic to add an extra surprise to Wave Echo Cave in my Lost Mine of Phandelver D&D campaign. This was one of the first times I tried using Speedpaint, and I found it surprisingly easy to achieve decent results quickly.

A miniature like this makes a good beginner project because it does not have too many small details and uses a fairly simple color scheme. I used Army Painter Hardened Leather Speedpaint for the wooden chest. Since then, it has become my go-to choice for quickly painting wood on both miniatures and terrain.

Thinning a lighter wash, such as Flesh Tone, and applying it to the teeth gives them a dirty, stained appearance and adds the perfect nasty look to the mimic.
