Hobgoblin Warband

Painting the Hobgoblins

I painted these Hobgoblin minis for my Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign to populate Cragmaw Castle with a few dangerous surprises. It was a fairly straightforward project. I chose to paint all four minis at the same time over three or four evenings, working through one step at a time. This roughly included priming, applying the base colors, painting the wooden and metallic parts, adding details such as the eyes, shading, painting the bases, and finally gluing the minis to the bases.

Work in progress showing how I wasted time basecoating the armor in purple.

Lessons Learned

  • I wasted time basecoating the armor pieces in purple, only to paint over them later with more natural metallic colors.
  • I was looking at the 2014 D&D artwork of the Hobgoblin and intended to create a similar purple color scheme for the armor. However, the colors I painted looked wrong and did not make the minis feel like intimidating or dangerous enemies.
  • The lesson I learned is that, as a beginner painter, it may be worth thinking twice before getting too adventurous with your colors. There is no shame in choosing the safer route when you are starting out.
